7/8th Grade - Deanna Darnall came to talk to the class about Juneau Public Health and the Teen Health Center.


6th Grade - The students got a grade check, the end of the quarter is Thursday. They watched "The Ant Bully". It is an excellent cartoon that deals with the issue of bullying.

Tuesday

7/8th Graders - The students listened to Michael Patterson who is dieing of cancer because he smoked for years.

6th Graders - The students did a short class on puberty and asked questions in separate boys and girls groups.
Monday

7/8th Graders - The students wrote questions for the speakers that are coming this week. They wrote a letter to me about the things that went well this quarter and what they would like to learn next quarter. We read Choices and Current Health magazines.

6th Graders - The students went online and worked on the WIN program which is a computer based program to look at readiness for careers. The students have a password and can work on the lessons at home as well.

Friday

All health students learned more about internet safety.


6th Graders - Just a Health Note: Next week we will be talking a bit more about puberty for one more day. We will be dividing the girls and boys into separate groups so that they will be comfortable with the information presented. We will be watching a video titled, “What Kids Want to Know About Sex and Growing Up.” The Children’s Television Workshop created the video; it is a 3-2-1 Contact Extra. If you would like to preview this contact me before Tuesday.

6th Graders - The students discussed different scenarios and looked for the example of sexual harassment. They learned about active listening and "I" statements and how this can help them to express when they are being harassed.

7/8th Grade - The students looked at ads and gender stereotyping. They looked at the impact of media, women and eating disorders, men and violence. There was a powerpoint on sexual harassment. They watched a video that showed many different examples both boys and girls. Lastly, they listened to scenarios and looked for the sexual harassment in the scenarios.

6th Graders- The students listed different human rights. Thank you to all of the parents who worked with your child on the Monday night homework. They just started to brainstorm what it means to be sexually harassed. No homework for Tuesday night.

7/8th Graders - The students talked about gender stereotypes. Sarah Arntson is presenting this week, she works at AWARE providing education kindergarten through college. The students need to bring in an ad from a magazine that shows gender stereotyping.

6th Graders- The students talked about healthy relationships with Sarah Arnston who is presenting this week, she works at AWARE providing education kindergarten through college. They had a homework assignment to share with an adult in their life.

7/8th Graders - The students talked about HPV, a very common STD. They learned about Gardasil, a vaccination for girls to prevent four kinds of HPV. If your daughter has not been vaccinated you might want to ask your doctor about Gardasil.

6th Graders - The students continued their discussion of drugs and alcohol by practicing different ways to say no. They had a survey for a parent or adult to see how peer pressure was when you were growing up. Friday they have an interesting fact sheet they are bringing home.

7/8th Graders - Wednesday and Thursday- The students watched a short video on STDs. They read Chapter 11, lessons 1-3, on contagious diseases. They filled out two worksheets.

6th Graders- Wednesday - The students looked at myths and facts about alcohol. They played an alcohol fact game. They have a worksheet to fill out for homework.

7/8th Graders - The students had a class on the growth of the human body from conception to old age. They read about the human reproductive system. They watched a video about teens who were going through puberty. They had three worksheets to fill out.

6th Graders- The students started the Project Alert program. Monday and Tuesday they looked at tobacco and marijuana. They looked at how it can harm you and a bit on how to make good choices. On Monday night they had a homework assignment to work on with an adult in their family.

7/8th graders - The students watched a video on what rumors can do to people. They read the textbook, a section on relationships.

6th graders - The students read the textbook about friends and family and created a poster for the hallway.

Monday/ Tuesday
7/8th graders - The students watched a movie about a bully.

6th graders - The students read about communicable diseases. For Tuesday and Wednesday the students will be making a powerpoint about a disease of their choice.

There was an assembly today about the magazine sales. It is the schools big fund raiser. Be sure to renew your subscriptions with the school.

7/8th Graders - The students did a few activities to work together. They talked about times that they get in arguments or upset about something. They worked on how to respond to these situations in a positive way.

6th Graders - The students studied who they might turn to for help. They will do an activity on Thursday which will take teamwork and is a challenge.
